Bon Secours completes critical care expansion at downtown campus

July 28, 2025

Bon Secours St. Francis announced the completion of renovations to expand its critical care and medical/surgical (med-surg) services on the Downtown campus. The updates will enhance patient care and increasing capacity via a brand new 34-bed med/surg unit on the 10th floor, and an expanded Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on the 3rd floor.

“We launched this expansion project more than a year ago, in June 2024, to help meet the growing healthcare needs of our community,” said David Walsh, Vice President of Support Services for Bon Secours St. Francis. “This investment reflects our continued commitment to patient-centered care and ensuring access to advanced medical services right here in Greenville.”

Hospital leaders and staff gathered to celebrate the completion of the new 10th floor med/surg unit with a blessing ceremony just before it officially opened to patients on July 9th. Initially, the unit will operate with 20 beds, but there are plans in place to expand to its full capacity of 34 beds by the end of this year. This state-of-the-art unit, specializing in orthopedic and spine patients, features modern amenities and panoramic views of Greenville.

“This expansion allows the hospital to ensure patients are placed in the right bed, at the right time, with the right level of care – a critical improvement in reducing and potentially even eliminating capacity constraints at the Downtown Campus,” said Ron Spencer, Administrative Director of Acute Care Services for Bon Secours St. Francis.

Meanwhile, a newly constructed ICU opened on the 3rd floor of the hospital Monday, July 28th. It features 18 beds, with an initial capacity of 12 patients and plans to scale up to full occupancy by the end of 2025. The hospital’s existing ICU will close for refurbishment in August.

With these new spaces, Bon Secours St. Francis Downtown is ensuring Upstate residents have access to state-of-the-art medical services now and for years to come. To learn more about the health system and the services we offer, visit bonsecours.com.
