August 12, 2025

Charleston County School District announced the appointment of veteran coach and athletics leader Gene Ross as the district’s new Athletic Director. With more than 30 years of experience in high school athletics, Ross brings championship coaching credentials, proven program-building skills, and a deep commitment to student-athlete development to the role.

Ross’ history with CCSD runs deep. He began his career in the district coaching at Garrett Academy and North Charleston High School. For the past 25 years, Ross served at Military Magnet Academy, where he earned Region Coach of the Year honors four times. Ross is credited with establishing the Military Magnet Academy athletic program, home to the four-time winning, currently reigning, state 1A Girls Basketball Champions.

In his new role, Ross will provide leadership, coordination, and oversight for all middle and high school athletic programs across the district. His responsibilities will include developing district-wide athletic policies, ensuring compliance with South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) regulations, overseeing athletic budgets and facilities, and fostering safe, equitable, and competitive athletic opportunities for all students.

“Coach Ross has the ability to connect with students, coaches, families, and the community in ways that inspire collaboration and pride,” said Superintendent Anita Huggins. “I have complete confidence that he will build upon the strong foundation laid by previous district athletics leaders Dave Spurlock, Bob Olson, and Trevor Strawderman.”

Over his career, Ross has been recognized not only for competitive success but also for building programs that emphasize character, discipline, and sportsmanship. He has a strong record of supporting coaches through professional development, expanding extracurricular opportunities, and connecting athletic programs to the broader community.
