ColaJazz Academy launches new 4-week jazz improvisation course with pianist & composer Nicholas Vlandis
August 12, 2025The ColaJazz Academy announced the launch of a brand-new 4-week course on Jazz Improvisation, taught by acclaimed pianist, composer, and educator Nicholas Vlandis. This immersive program kicks off Monday, September 29, 2025, and runs through October 20 at the ColaJazz Office in Columbia, SC.
Vlandis, a fixture in South Carolina’s jazz scene for more than a decade, has performed extensively across the Southeast and is a graduate of the University of South Carolina’s Jazz Studies program. In Fall 2025, he will begin his Master’s degree in Jazz Composition and Arranging. Known for his artistry and deep knowledge of jazz language, Vlandis brings a wealth of expertise to this highly interactive course.
Open to musicians with a working knowledge of major and minor scales, the class focuses on developing essential improvisational tools—covering jazz vocabulary, chord-tone enclosures, harmonic understanding, transcription skills, and performance practice. Each week includes group exercises in all 12 keys, individual presentations, and guided assignments designed to strengthen both technical skills and creative expression.
“ColaJazz exists to make world-class jazz education and performance experiences accessible to everyone,” says ColaJazz Executive Director Mark Rapp. “We believe learning to improvise isn’t just about playing music—it’s about listening, connecting, and expressing your voice. This new course grew directly from community feedback at our summer jazz camps, and with an inspiring teaching artist like Nick Vlandis, we know students will leave energized and equipped with skills they can use for a lifetime.”
Classes meet Mondays from 6:00–7:30 p.m. at the ColaJazz Office, 2123 College Street, Columbia, SC 29205. Space is limited to ensure a high-quality learning experience. ColaJazz Member & student discounts available.
