Bon Secours becomes first in Greenville County to offer contrast-enhanced mammography

August 14, 2025

Bon Secours St. Francis announced the addition of Contrast-Enhanced Mammography (CEM) at its Pearlie Harris Center for Breast Health, becoming the first in Greenville County and one of only three facilities in South Carolina to offer this advanced breast imaging technology.

CEM provides physicians with enhanced imaging capabilities to better detect and diagnose breast cancer, particularly in cases where traditional mammograms or ultrasounds yield inconclusive results. The new offering combines traditional mammography with a contrast agent to highlight areas of unusual blood flow that may signal cancer growth.

“We’re committed to providing our patients access to the latest tools in cancer detection and care,” said Dr. Jennifer Cranny, a radiologist at Bon Secours St. Francis. “This technology brings us closer to our mission of catching cancer earlier, when it’s most treatable, while also improving the comfort and convenience of the experience.”

The procedure uses the same Hologic® equipment trusted for 3D™ mammograms, with the addition of an intravenous contrast agent – the same type used in CT scans. The result is a set of high-resolution images that can reveal cancers that might otherwise go undetected.

With this addition, Bon Secours joins just a few facilities in South Carolina offering contrast-enhanced mammography, bringing this powerful tool closer to home for thousands of Upstate women. CEM can be particularly helpful in evaluating women with dense breast tissue, suspicious lesions, or those needing surgical planning. It’s also a valuable option for patients who cannot undergo MRI due to implants, claustrophobia, or other contraindications.

“The technology enhances what we can see and, more importantly, what we can do,” said Dr. Cranny. “It’s one more way we’re putting advanced, patient-centered care at the forefront.”
