Dorchester County and Summerville YMCA break ground on new sports complex in Oakbrook
August 29, 2025Dorchester County and Summerville YMCA leaders, along with local officials, broke ground on the new Oakbrook Sports Complex.
The project is part of a broader effort to redevelop the Oakbrook area and provide state-of-the-art amenities for residents and visitors. Last year, Dorchester County and the YMCA formed a partnership to make the complex a reality. The plan is funded through Dorchester County’s Tax Increment Financing (TIF) and Legislative Delegation support, along with 17 acres of land contributed by the YMCA.
The Oakbrook TIF has already supported projects such as the Ladson Fire and EMS station, the Old Trolley Road Extension, and other public improvements. One upcoming project — the Sawmill Branch Trail Oakbrook Extension — is expected to connect the new sports complex to the existing trail system. Public comment on the extension is open until September 25, 2025.
The new Oakbrook Sports Complex will include state-of-the-art turf sports fields and courts, multipurpose spaces, a concession building with restrooms, a playground, and access to the Sawmill Branch Trail System. Under Summerville YMCA’s leadership, the sports complex will also offer year-round programs and activities designed to cater to the diverse interests and needs of our community.
Project completion is expected in Winter 2026.
