Revolutionary War Lecture Series Kicks Off at Laurens County Museum Sept. 9
September 8, 2025First Topic: The Snow Campaign and Its Chilling Impact on the Southern Front
The Laurens County Museum will launch its highly anticipated Revolutionary War Lecture Series on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at 7:00 PM. The first in this ten-part series exploring key battles in the Ninety Six District will take place at the museum, located at 116 South Public Square in Laurens.
Historian and battlefield preservationist Durant Ashmore will deliver an in-depth presentation titled “The Snow Campaign and the First Siege of Ninety Six.” The Snow Campaign marks the first land engagement in the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War and unfolded within 20 miles of present-day Laurens County.
Why “The Snow Campaign”?
Following the Patriot victory at the Battle of the Canebrake, an extraordinary weather event occurred. A massive snowstorm swept through the South Carolina Backcountry, dumping up to 18 inches of snow—a rare and dangerous accumulation in the region. This unseasonable storm created freezing, hazardous conditions for both Patriot soldiers and Loyalist prisoners as they made their way back through the Upstate. The brutal weather left a lasting mark on the campaign and gave it its enduring name.
The lecture is free for Laurens County Museum members and youth, with a suggested $5 donation for all others. The event is open to the public and offers a rare opportunity to gain insight into local Revolutionary War history from a renowned expert.
Guests are encouraged to arrive early and tour the museum’s exhibit hall, which is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. For more information, call (864) 681-3678, visit LaurensCountyMuseum.org, or follow the Laurens County Museum on Facebook.
