Who Knew? Clara Barton & Harriet Tubman in South Carolina During the Civil War

October 6, 2025

The Laurens County Museum invites the community to a fascinating Lunch and Learn presentation on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, from Noon to 1:00 p.m., exploring the powerful but often overlooked stories of Clara Barton and Harriet Tubman’s time in South Carolina during the Civil War.

Sponsored by South Carolina Humanities, the program will be led by author and scholar Ann-Chadwell Humphries, who will shed light on the remarkable work these two influential women carried out in South Carolina’s Lowcountry in 1863.

Two Women, Two Missions, One Historic Moment

While Clara Barton—known as the “Angel of the Battlefield”—was providing critical medical care and supplies to both Union and Confederate soldiers during the Battle of Fort Wagner, Harriet Tubman was leading daring reconnaissance operations for the Union Army. Tubman’s leadership culminated in a bold raid up the Combahee River, where she guided Union forces in freeing more than 700 enslaved men, women, and children.

Though their paths were different, Barton and Tubman shared a commitment to courage, service, and justice—stories that are rarely told in full. This special presentation brings their South Carolina legacies to life.
