Lecture Explores “The Cherokee War of 1776” at Laurens County Museum

October 13, 2025

The Laurens County Museum’s Revolutionary Battle Series continues on Tuesday, October 14, at 7:00 p.m., with a compelling lecture on “The Cherokee War of 1776.”

Historian and battlefield preservationist Durant Ashmore will lead the program, sharing in-depth insights into the hostilities between the Cherokee Nation and the settlers in South Carolina’s Backcountry during a pivotal and turbulent moment in American history.

Around this period, tensions were escalating on multiple fronts: British Crown Loyalists and American Patriots were beginning to clash in deadly skirmishes, while boundary disputes with Native Americans added further volatility. The Cherokee War of 1776 marked a significant chapter in the Revolutionary era, and Ashmore’s lecture will illuminate the people, events, and strategies that shaped this conflict.

The lecture is open to the public. Museum members and youth may attend for free, while there is a suggested donation of $5 for all others to support the museum’s programming.
