Laurens County Sheriff’s Office Issues Scam Alert: “Brushing” Scheme Targets Local Residents
October 15, 2025While receiving surprise packages may seem harmless—or even exciting—authorities are urging the public to exercise caution and not scan any QR codes included with these items.
This scheme is part of what’s known as a “brushing scam.” Scammers send inexpensive, unsolicited items to random individuals in order to:
-
Create fake online purchase histories and reviews to boost product rankings.
-
Trick recipients into scanning QR codes or visiting malicious websites that can steal personal or financial information.
What To Do If You Receive One of These Packages
-
Do not scan any QR codes or visit websites listed in the package.
-
Do not provide personal or financial information to the sender.
-
You may keep or discard the item, but it is safest to avoid interacting with the sender entirely.
Scammers often use fake names and addresses, making it difficult to trace the source of the packages. By remaining vigilant and spreading the word to friends and family, residents can help stop the spread of this deceptive practice.
For more information about brushing scams, the Federal Trade Commission has posted a helpful explainer video here.
The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office encourages everyone to stay alert, think twice before scanning unfamiliar QR codes, and report suspicious activity.
