Attorney General Alan Wilson Leads Annual Silent Witness to Honor Victims of Fatal Domestic Abuse in 2024
October 15, 2025Ceremony Held During National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Attorney General Alan Wilson led participants through the 28th annual Silent Witness Ceremony that was held today on the South Carolina State Capitol Complex in Columbia, S.C. During the solemn ceremony, Attorney General Wilson called the names of thirty-five women and eleven men from across the state who lost their lives in the previous year as the result of domestic violence.
Family members and friends carried life-sized silhouettes, each representing a victim. As the silhouettes were brought to the State House steps, a bell was rung to honor each victim. An additional silhouette (47) was carried out to represent potential unknown victims.
“This Ceremony reminds us that every life lost to domestic violence was a life of value and purpose. We honor their memory by strengthening our commitment to justice, protection, and the prevention of violence in our communities,” said Attorney General Alan Wilson. “Let us continue to stand with survivors through awareness, training, resource building, advocacy, and action.”
In 2023, the Violence Policy Center temporarily suspended the state ranking usually contained in its annual report as the FBI transitions to a new reporting system. The 2023 report analyzed 25 years of data, and South Carolina was in the top 10 states from 1996-2020. In 2020 and 2022, the State ranked 11th and 23rd, respectively.
Their latest publication, released in September 2025, summarized national data trends related to the number of men who killed women in 2023. Their summary analysis reported that nine out of ten women are killed by men that they know.
The Honorable Alan Wilson, religious leaders, and other community members made special remarks to highlight the problem of domestic violence in our state.
