City of Charleston continues series of meetings on 2026 transportation sales tax referendum
October 17, 2025The City of Charleston held the first in a series of meetings last night to discuss the proposed 2026 Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax Referendum and begin identifying the city’s priority projects for inclusion.
During Tuesday’s Traffic and Transportation Committee meeting, Mayor William Cogswell and City Councilmembers focused on Johns Island and James Island roadway projects, including safety improvements, congestion relief, and critical infrastructure needs.
The discussion marked the start of a broader process to define the city’s transportation priorities across all areas of Charleston. Over the next several weeks, the committee will continue reviewing project needs through a combination of regularly scheduled and special meetings, each centered on a specific geographic or thematic focus.
Traffic and Transportation Committee Meetings
- Tuesday, October 14 – 3:30 p.m. (Special Meeting – Completed)
Focus: Johns Island and James Island roadway projects
- Tuesday, October 28 – 3:00 p.m.
Focus: West Ashley and Downtown roadway projects
- Tuesday, November 12 – 3:30 p.m. (Special Meeting)
Focus: Greenbelt preservation, bike and pedestrian infrastructure, and public transit initiatives
- Tuesday, November 18 – 3:00 p.m.
Focus: Public input and review of all projects as one comprehensive transportation package
Charleston City Council Meetings
- Tuesday, October 14 – 5:00 p.m.
- Tuesday, October 28 – 5:00 p.m.
- Wednesday, November 12 – 5:00 p.m. (Rescheduled due to Veterans Day holiday on November 11)
- Tuesday, November 18 – 5:00 p.m.
All meetings are open to the public and will be held in City Hall Council Chamber, 80 Broad Street and streamed on this City’s YouTube Channel.
