A book talk with the author at 6:30 pm will be followed by audience Q&A and a book signing of Sheheen’s new book The Concise Guide to South Carolina State Government. Historic Camden is located at 222 Broad St. Camden, SC 29020. The event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase and autographing.

The Concise Guide to South Carolina State Government is the essential nonpartisan place to learn why the Palmetto State works the way it does. Vincent Sheheen explains his reason for writing The Concise Guide to South Carolina State Government, “No current book explains South Carolina state government, its structure, and its history.” With that goal at the center, this book traces our modern state government to the British Colonial period discussing and explaining its development through the American Revolution, anti-bellum era, Civil War, Reconstruction, Jim Crow era, and into modernity. While using historical figures to add context and understanding of why the state’s government is what it is, The Concise Guide to South Carolina State Government explains the current structure and operations of state government touching on the three state branches of government, state agencies, and local governments. As a former South Carolina state senator Vincent Sheheen provides an engaging and accessible overview of the history and structures of the state’s government with the insight that only someone who has walked the corridors of the State House in Columbia can provide.

VINCENT SHEHEEN was born and raised in Camden. He was a member of the South Carolina Senate from 2004-2020, and a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 2001-2004. Mayor Sheheen was elected to Camden City Council in November 2024. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from Clemson University and a Juris Doctor Degree from the University of South Carolina. Vincent is co-host of the popular podcast about SC politics Bourbon in the Backroom, and has published numerous essays, articles, and the book, The Right Way: Getting the Palmetto State Back on Track.

Mayor Sheheen and his wife Amy have three children and one grandchild.
