GCSD’s magnet programs are located in the Carvers Bay area and focus on Digital Immersion, STREAM, Creative and Performing Arts, STEAM, and Early College and Career. They promote specific theme curriculum and implementation of an evidence-based Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) system, which changes lives by helping schools shift to a more equitable, student-centered approach. AVID’s mission is to help schools close the opportunity gap, and prepare all students for college, careers, and life.

“Our magnet programs are designed to ensure equitable access to high-level coursework and real-world experiences. When students see themselves in these pathways, they not only learn more, but they achieve more,” explained Deanna Stone, MSAP Director for the district.

The theme/focus of these magnet programs is integrated with the South Carolina State Standards to provide an enriching, innovative, and engaging learning experience for all students. Students can create, perform and apply real-world applications to build content knowledge that is enhanced with hands-on learning opportunities. This focus is designed to prepare every student academically, socially, and emotionally to be creative leaders in a global society.

The first window for magnet applications begins Monday, February 23 at 8:00 am and closes Monday, March 9 at 5:00 pm. Then families will be notified on Friday, March 20 and one week to accept the their child’s selection.

The second window opens on Thursday, April 23 at 8:00 am and closes Monday, May 5 at 5:00 pm, with families notified May 20 and acceptance required by Friday, May 29 at 5:00 pm.

“Three clearly defined application windows afford families and students living outside the Carvers Bay attendance zone equitable access to a variety of learning pathways, ensuring every applicant has a fair opportunity to pursue their interests and engage in rigorous learning,” Stone added.
