Golden Strip Schools Learn Classifications in Latest SCHSL Realignment
January 25, 2026High school athletics in the Golden Strip will enter a new competitive cycle in 2026 as the South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) has officially released classification placements for the 2026–27 and 2027–28 school years.
The SCHSL conducts realignment every two years using updated enrollment figures to ensure competitive balance among member schools across the state. While specific region assignments are still pending final approval following the league’s appeals period, school classifications — which determine the overall size level at which teams compete — are now confirmed.
Mauldin and Hillcrest to Compete in Class 5A
Mauldin High School and Hillcrest High School will both compete in Class 5A, the largest classification in South Carolina high school athletics.
For the Mauldin Mavericks and the Hillcrest Rams, placement in 5A means competing against other large-enrollment schools across the state in sports ranging from football and basketball to soccer, baseball and track. Competing at this level typically brings deep playoff brackets and matchups against some of South Carolina’s most established athletic programs.
Fountain Inn High School Competing in Class 4A
Fountain Inn High School will compete in Class 4A during the upcoming realignment cycle. This classification includes mid-sized schools and offers a competitive landscape that balances strong athletic programs with manageable travel for regular-season play.
For the Fountain Inn Fury, the placement provides a defined competitive tier as the school continues to grow its athletic traditions across multiple sports.
Region Assignments Coming Soon
While classifications are finalized, specific region placements and opponent groupings have not yet been officially published by SCHSL. Those assignments will be confirmed after the league completes its appeals process in the coming weeks.
Region placement determines regular-season opponents and plays a major role in playoff qualification and seeding, making it a highly anticipated next step for coaches, athletes and fans alike.

The new classifications set the stage for the next era of high school sports in the Golden Strip. Student-athletes will continue to compete at levels aligned with school enrollment, while communities rally behind familiar programs and rising talent.
