Trail Growth: Swamp Rabbit Extension Set to Link the Golden Strip
January 27, 2026The highly anticipated expansion of the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail is moving into its next critical phase, bringing the Upstateās premier greenway closer to a seamless connection between Mauldin, Simpsonville, and Fountain Inn. This massive multi-year project continues to reshape local geography, transforming former rail corridors into a continuous paved path for recreation and alternative transportation.
The current stage of development focuses on closing the gaps between established hubs and the newer extensions stretching toward the southern end of the county. Engineering teams are working through complex terrain and existing utility easements to ensure the path remains accessible and safe for cyclists, runners, and pedestrians of all ages.
Bridging the Gap in Mauldin
A centerpiece of the local expansion is the integration of the trail with the BridgeWay Station development. The construction of the pedestrian bridge over I-385 has already established a vital link, but current efforts are centered on the “trailhead” experience at East Butler Road. Recent grants have accelerated the planning for enhanced signage, lighting, and seating areas that will serve as the gateway for Mauldin residents to join the larger network.
The expansion is designed to provide a safe, off-road route for students and commuters, potentially reducing vehicle traffic on congested secondary roads. By connecting residential neighborhoods directly to retail centers and schools, the trail is evolving from a weekend leisure destination into a functional piece of regional infrastructure.
The Push Toward Fountain Inn
Further south, the vision of a “Golden Strip” trail is materializing as crews work on the segments connecting Simpsonville to downtown Fountain Inn. This portion of the project requires significant coordination with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) to manage safe crossings and navigate the historic rail rights-of-way that define the areaās landscape.
Once completed, the southern leg will offer residents a direct line to the Fountain Inn Splash Pad and the commerce of Main Street. This connectivity is expected to drive a surge in “trail-oriented development,” encouraging new businesses such as bike shops, cafes, and outdoor equipment retailers to set up shop along the corridor.
A Catalyst for Economic and Physical Health
The environmental and economic benefits of the expansion remain a driving force behind the projectās funding. Beyond providing a space for physical activity, the trail serves as a significant draw for home buyers and commercial investors who prioritize walkability and outdoor amenities.
As the asphalt continues to roll out across the Upstate, the Swamp Rabbit Trail is solidifying its status as a regional landmark. With each new mile completed, the Golden Strip moves one step closer to becoming one of the most connected suburban corridors in the Southeast.
