A Century of Valor: Simpsonville Honors 105-Year-Old WWII Veteran Ralph Conte
January 30, 2026In a world that often moves at a breakneck pace, the community of Simpsonville recently paused to honor a man whose life has spanned more than a century of American history. Cpl. Ralph Conte, a highly decorated World War II veteran and longtime resident, celebrated his 105th birthday with a series of honors that recognize his extraordinary service and enduring spirit.
The milestone was marked by a deeply moving ceremony at Saint Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, where the Quilts of Valor Foundation Upstate South Carolina presented Conte with a hand-stitched Quilt of Valor. The presentation, supported by American Legion Post 271 of Mauldin, served as a tangible “thank you” for the sacrifices he made more than eight decades ago.
A Hero’s Journey
Born on October 12, 1920, Conte’s story is a living testament to the Greatest Generation. Drafted at age 21, he served in the 94th Infantry Division, 301st Infantry, Company F. His wartime service took him through nine different countries, but it was his actions on the front lines of Europe that cemented his legacy.
Conte landed on Utah Beach in Normandy just 95 days after D-Day. Within two weeks of arriving on the front lines, he was wounded by shrapnel, an injury that earned him the Purple Heart. Undeterred, he returned to duty and later received the Bronze Star for his heroic efforts in Germany, where he and a fellow soldier captured 18 enemy soldiers, securing a vital supply route for Allied forces.
Beyond the Battlefield
In addition to his American decorations, Conte was recently awarded the French Legion of Honor, the highest merit in France, for his role in the country’s liberation. Yet, to those who know him in the Golden Strip, he is as well-known for his post-war passion as he is for his military record.
After being honorably discharged in 1945, Conte found a new way to capture life—through the lens of a camera. He became a Master Photographer, opening Conte Studios in 1958. Even today, at 105, his family notes that he maintains a sharp eye for photography and a deep curiosity for modern technology.
Community Support
The birthday celebration included a special gift to help the centenarian maintain his independence: a new mobility scooter, provided through the coordinated efforts of local veteran organizations and his parish.
For the residents of Simpsonville, Ralph Conte represents more than just a historical figure; he is a neighbor who continues to inspire students and citizens with his stories of bravery, brotherhood, and faith. As he often reminds those who listen to his experiences, the freedoms enjoyed today were earned through the collective courage of many who never made it home.
