Film premiere at Cameron Auditorium
Sunday afternoon, February 8th, a new revolutionary war docudrama, “Freedom Fighters of Calhoun County,” will have a premiere screening at the Cameron Auditorium in Cameron, South Carolina. The SC250 Calhoun County Committee received two grants from the SC250 Sestercentenniel Commission for shooting and completing a docudrama about five unsung heroes from their county.
Between the years from 1770 to 1782, many people from Calhoun County risked their lives for the idea of living free from the tyranny of King George III. William “Danger’ Thomson was a key leader in the Battle of Sullivan’s Island in 1776. Private John Chavis, a free African American, fought with the Continental Army as well as two major militia units. Rebecca Brewton Motte, fought with Francis Marion (Swamp Fox) and “Lighthorse Harry” Lee to force the British to surrender her home near the Congaree River. Emily Geiger was a brave courier between two generals. And Commodore Alexander Gillon went through serious challenges as the Commodore of the South Carolina Navy.
Co-Chair of the SC250 Calhoun County Committee and co-producer of the film, Winnie Rickenbacker, was grateful. “We look forward to sharing this inspiring film with our county and state residents as well as students and teachers.” Douglas Doster, co-chair, was also grateful. “We thank the SC250 commission for the two grants we received to fund this excellent film celebrating some of our great lost heroes of the American Revolution.”
