Swamp Rabbit Trail Expansion into Fountain Inn Breaks Ground
February 12, 2026A long-anticipated connection is officially moving forward as construction begins on a new section of the Swamp Rabbit Trail extending deeper into the Golden Strip.
The expansion will link portions of southern Greenville County, bringing the popular multi-use trail closer to residents in Fountain Inn and Simpsonville. For years, community leaders and residents have discussed extending the trail’s footprint beyond Greenville and Travelers Rest.
Now, that vision is turning into visible progress.
Connecting Communities
The Swamp Rabbit Trail has become one of the Upstate’s most recognized recreational assets, drawing walkers, runners, cyclists, and families year-round. The planned 2-mile paved shared-use path will extend the southern Golden Strip section of the trail—an important step toward transforming a short, standalone segment into a connected network designed for everyday use, not just recreation.
Once complete, this stretch will help link neighborhoods, schools, and parks, including Mulberry Estates, Fountain Inn High School, and Bryson Elementary School, supporting safer walking, biking, and access throughout the community.
Extending the trail south is expected to:
-
Improve pedestrian and bike connectivity
-
Increase access to outdoor recreation
-
Strengthen ties between Golden Strip communities
-
Provide safer routes connecting residential areas and local schools
Local officials say the project represents more than just pavement. It is part of a broader effort to enhance quality of life, support sustainable growth, and create infrastructure that serves residents’ daily needs.
What Residents Can Expect
Construction crews have begun initial work on the southern expansion segment. While timelines may shift depending on weather and logistics, officials anticipate steady progress throughout the year.
Once completed, the extension will allow residents in Fountain Inn and Simpsonville to connect more directly with the broader trail system that currently runs north toward downtown Greenville and Travelers Rest.
Businesses in the Golden Strip are also watching closely. In other parts of Greenville County, trail access has encouraged foot traffic, small business growth, and community events.
A Boost for the Golden Strip
As housing and commercial development continues across the Golden Strip, infrastructure projects like the Swamp Rabbit Trail expansion are viewed as strategic investments. Trails often serve as gathering spaces, economic drivers, and lifestyle amenities that attract families and young professionals alike.
With construction now underway, the Golden Strip moves one step closer to joining the broader Upstate trail network that has reshaped recreation and connectivity throughout Greenville County.
More updates will follow as the project progresses.
