HGTC Chef Joseph Bonaparte wins statewide innovation award
February 17, 2026Joseph Bonaparte, Executive Director of the International Culinary Institute of Myrtle Beach at Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC), has been named the 2026 A. Wade Martin Innovator of the Year.
The prestigious award, presented by the South Carolina Technical Education Association, recognizes outstanding leadership and impact on workforce development. Since joining HGTC in 2012, Chef Bonaparte has transformed the culinary program into a nationally recognized, sustainability-focused powerhouse.
Key achievements under his leadership include:

Sustainability: Opening a 30,000-square-foot LEED Silver-certified facility and reducing waste by over 70% through recycling and composting.

Industry Standards: Collaborating with the James Beard Foundation on food sustainability and securing the first dual accreditation in the state for Culinary and Pastry Arts.

Workforce Growth: Developing the Hospitality and Tourism Management degree to support one of South Carolina’s largest industries.
