Mauldin Police Chief George Miller Honored with Prestigious Leadership Award
February 22, 2026Chief George Miller of the Mauldin Police Department has been recognized with the Chief Richard LaMunyon Leadership Award, one of the highest honors in the law enforcement community. The award was presented at the 2026 South Carolina Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) Recognition Luncheon, celebrating Miller’s long-standing commitment to Special Olympics South Carolina.
A Legacy of the Flame
Named after the founder of the Law Enforcement Torch Run, Wichita Police Chief Richard LaMunyon, this award is reserved for individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership and a sustained commitment to athletes with intellectual disabilities. Since its inception in 1981, the Torch Run has grown into the largest grassroots fundraising movement for Special Olympics globally, and Chief Miller has been a vital part of that growth within the Upstate.
Miller was one of only two law enforcement leaders in the state to receive the award this year, alongside Sheriff Sam Richardson of Dorchester County. The recognition highlights not just personal dedication, but the culture of service Miller has fostered within the Mauldin Police Department.
Guardians of the Flame in Mauldin
Under Chief Miller’s leadership, the Mauldin Police Department has consistently expanded its involvement in the Torch Run. Officers known as Guardians of the Flame carry the Flame of Hope to opening ceremonies and participate in year-round fundraising efforts like the Polar Plunge and Tip-A-Cop events.
In 2025 alone, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Torch Run raised over $1.26 million to support athletes throughout the state. These funds provide essential resources for year-round sports training, competitions, and health programs that foster confidence and resilience in athletes and their families.
Leadership Through Service
For Chief Miller, the award represents more than a personal achievement; it reflects the department’s core values of community engagement and inclusion. By leading from the front, Miller has encouraged his officers to view their roles as mentors and advocates, strengthening the bond between law enforcement and the communities they protect.
The Mauldin Police Department and the City of Mauldin invite residents to join them in congratulating Chief Miller on this significant honor and for his continued work in lighting the way for acceptance and inclusion in the Golden Strip.
