Hopesewee Plantation to host indigo dyeing workshops in March
February 22, 2026Hopsewee Plantation is hosting two Art of Indigo Dyeing workshops, one on Saturday, March 7, and another session on Wednesday, March 11, both beginning at 11:00 am
Step back in time and experience the “magic” of all-natural indigo dyeing at the historic home of Thomas Lynch, Sr., a noted indigo baron and first president of the Winyah Indigo Society. This hands-on workshop explores the legacy of Eliza Lucas Pinckney, South Carolina’s famous “Indigo Girl,” and the vital role indigo played as a colonial cash crop.
Workshop Highlights:
- Hands-on Learning: Master various wrapping and dyeing techniques used to create the distinctive blue once used for British Naval uniforms.
- Materials Provided: The instructor provides all necessary materials and three items to dye (options typically include oversized sleepshirts, tea towels, scarves, or pillow covers).
- Personalize Your Gear: Participants are invited to bring up to three small cotton items of their own to dip into the indigo vat.
- Intimate Class Size: Classes are kept small (minimum 4, maximum 10 students) to ensure a high-quality, personalized experience.
These workshops are perfect for families, friends, and coworkers looking to create unique art and lasting memories at one of South Carolina’s most historic landmarks, located at 494 Hopsewee Road, Georgetown, S.C.
The workshop costs $75 and lasts about 2.5 hours. Reservations are required. To book, visit Hopsewee.com or call (843) 546-7891.
