HGTC to host Author Showcase featuring eight local authors

February 23, 2026

Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC) will host an Author Showcase on Wednesday, Feb. 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at College Grounds in Building 200 on the Conway Campus. The event is organized and hosted by Dr. Michael Roberts, professor of English and writer-in-residence at the College.

The showcase will feature eight local professional authors, including a songwriter, representing a diverse range of literary and musical expression. Designed to encourage reading, writing, and creative expression across campus, the event will provide students, faculty, staff, and community members the opportunity to engage directly with working writers and creators.

“This showcase is about promoting literacy and celebrating the power of storytelling in all its forms,” said Dr. Roberts. “We have extraordinary creative talent in Horry County, and this event allows our students to see what is possible while connecting with individuals who have turned writing into published and performed works.”

Throughout the day, attendees may visit author tables, explore books and written works, learn about songwriting and the creative process, and engage in conversations about inspiration, discipline, and publishing. Authors will share insights into their craft, offering encouragement and practical guidance to aspiring writers.

Dr. Roberts said the event was inspired by his desire to strengthen a culture of literacy at HGTC and to support students who may have an interest in writing but need direction and encouragement.

“As an English professor, I regularly meet students who have creative aspirations but lack confidence or opportunities for mentorship,” he said. “Many are gifted writers. Some experience writer’s anxiety. All benefit from connection and encouragement. By bringing professional authors to campus, we hope to spark that confidence and inspire students to begin with one book, one lyric, or one page.”

Beyond inspiring students, the Author Showcase aims to build a stronger community of readers and writers by networking local creative professionals with HGTC students and faculty. College leaders hope the event will serve as a springboard for future literary and creative programming that benefits both the campus and the surrounding region.

The event is free and open to the public. Community members, book clubs, family members, and literary enthusiasts are encouraged to attend at any time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
