Next Thursday the next theatrical offering from the Swamp Fox Players is a musical comedy entitled Nunsense. I had the opportunity to speak with Karen Morello, the show’s director, about the play, her background in theatre and why you best order your tickets soon.

Georgetown SC Gazette:

Tell me about how you got involved with the Swamp Fox Players.

Karen Morello:

I moved to Murrells Inlet in the summer of 2023, from Connecticut, where I had been active with several community theatre groups over the years. I tried out as a performer for the play Sister Act. Then they invited me to join their Board of Directors. I also performed in Living on the Legacy. I expressed a willingness to direct and was especially interested in directing Nunsense because it’s very funny and has upbeat songs. It’s really a spoof with a cast of five leads and a small ensemble.

Georgetown SC Gazette:

So how long have you been involved in the theatre? Were you a professional actor or director?

Karen Morello:

I started acting in my teens and then directing in my 20s. I wasn’t a professional, but I have performed in and directed community theatre plays for over 50 years throughout Fairfield County, Connecticut and Westchester, New York. This performance of Nunsense will be my directorial debut with the Swamp Fox Players.

Georgetown SC Gazette:

How many plays do the Swamp Fox Players usually put on in a year and what’s on the horizon?

Karen Morello:

We typically have four shows a year, including one that is geared toward children and youth. We have a couple of comedies and usually a musical. This year we’re doing Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare outdoors at the Kaminski House in the fall. We are really excited about that. People will come out and sit on the lawn to enjoy the play for free. We have some donors who have helped to make this performance possible, so we look forward to putting that show on for the community.

Georgetown SC Gazette:

Are there still tickets available for Nunsense?

Karen Morello:

Yes, we still have tickets for the shows on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and you can order those online. The Sunday matinees are call-in only, meaning you can’t order these online and need to call for availability as they historically sell out quickly.

The Swamp Fox Players’ upcoming performance of Nunsense begins March 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, and 14 at 7:30 pm, with two Sunday matinees scheduled for March 8 and 15 at 2:30 pm at the Georgetown Strand Theatre.

Tickets are $25 and may be ordered online at www.swampfoxplayers.com or by phone at 843-527-2924, extension 1.
