Local HVAC Leader Encourages Golden Strip Students to Build Careers with Purpose
March 3, 2026Students at the Golden Strip Career Center recently received more than a lesson in heating and air systems — they received a lesson in life.
HVAC students welcomed Josh Waters of Waldrop Plumbing, Air & Electric for a candid and motivating discussion about what it takes to succeed in the skilled trades. Waters spoke not only about career paths in the industry, but about developing character, confidence and a mindset that leads to long-term success.
His central message to students was clear: discovering your passion can open the door to a meaningful career. Rather than chasing titles or paychecks alone, he encouraged students to focus on becoming professionals who bring value wherever they go.
Waters emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive attitude and striving for balance between work and home life. He reminded students that setbacks are not something to fear, but opportunities to grow. In the trades, as in life, mistakes can become stepping stones when approached with the right perspective.
Beyond technical skills, Waters challenged students to stand out in everyday moments. He spoke about the importance of doing the small things that others overlook — whether that means keeping a workspace clean or taking initiative without being asked. According to Waters, professionalism begins with character, and character shows up in daily habits.
He also stressed the value of continuous learning. In an industry that constantly evolves with new equipment and technology, those who commit to ongoing education will always have an advantage. Expanding knowledge and sharpening skills, he noted, directly increases earning potential and long-term opportunity.
The visit reflects the Golden Strip Career Center’s ongoing commitment to connecting students with real-world professionals who can offer both practical insight and mentorship. By bringing industry leaders into the classroom, the program helps bridge the gap between education and employment.
As the demand for skilled trades continues to grow across the Upstate, moments like these reinforce the strong partnership between local businesses and career-focused education — and help prepare the next generation of HVAC professionals for success both on the job and beyond.
