Laurens County K9 Deputies Join Statewide Effort Supporting “Fargo’s Law”

Deputies with the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office traveled to the South Carolina Statehouse on March 4 to show their support for proposed legislation aimed at strengthening protections for law enforcement K9s.

The bill, known as Fargo’s Law (H.3034), would significantly increase criminal penalties for anyone who intentionally injures or kills a police K9 while the animal is performing its duties.

Members of the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit were present at the Statehouse alongside law enforcement agencies from across South Carolina to demonstrate support for the measure and highlight the important role K9 teams play in keeping communities safe.

Law enforcement K9s assist officers in a wide range of critical operations. These specially trained dogs are often called upon to apprehend dangerous suspects, detect illegal narcotics, locate missing persons, and identify firearms or explosive devices. Because of the nature of their work, K9 teams frequently enter high-risk situations where their training and instincts help protect both officers and the public.

Sheriff Don Reynolds emphasized that the dogs serving alongside deputies are more than tools—they are valued members of the team who face real dangers in the line of duty.

“These dogs are vital members of this team,” Reynolds said. “There is a great need for enhanced legal protections and repercussions. They put their lives on the line in service to their communities. We value their service and anyone who intentionally harms them will be held accountable.”

Supporters of Fargo’s Law say the legislation recognizes the sacrifice made by K9 officers and ensures that those who intentionally harm them face serious consequences.

For deputies in Laurens County and across the state, the message is simple: the four-legged officers who serve alongside them deserve the same respect and protection afforded to their human counterparts.
