Actors’ Theater of South Carolina Historians to discuss Captain Henry Felder as a Founding Son of America in Orangeburg
March 10, 2026On Saturday, March 21st, the SC250 Commission is funding a taping of historians in a panel at the Orangeburg County Library on the qualifications of martyred hero, Captain Henry Felder, to be considered a founding son of the United States of America.
The public panel with historians will explore the contributions of Felder, a patriot militia leader and Orangeburg resident, during the war. It is funded by an SC 250 Educational Grant, Actors Theater of South Carolina Celebrates Lost Heroes of the American Revolution.
Henry Felder, who was killed while fighting the British in 1780, also wrote an “Address and Declaration of Separation from the English King,” delivering it as foreman of the Grand Jury in Orangeburg, on May 20th, 1776, roughly five weeks before the “Declaration of Independence” was first delivered by Thomas Jefferson on June 28th, 1776.
Felder, also a member of the First and Second Provincial Congresses, was tasked with making gunpowder, raising funds for artillery and preventing supplies from reaching the British army. He led a unit of militia with his seven sons under supervision of General Thomas Sumter. Felder’s fight for liberty cost him his life in 1780.
The panel discussion with question and answer, includes screening of a trailer from the award-winning docudrama, All For Liberty, starring nationally known actor, and Captain Felder’s sixth great-grandson, Clarence Felder. There will also be several clips from the film screened to illuminate Felder’s motives in his fight for liberty. “We’re grateful to the South Carolina SC250 Commission for the ability to discuss the opinions about Captain Felder,” said Executive producer/writer and co-star of the film, Clarence Felder. “He is a great lost hero.”
Panelists are Alexia Jones Helsley (History Department, USC Aiken), John Brian Eleazer (Author, The South Carolina Militia in the Revolutionary War, Captain Henry Felder & the Backcountry Defense.), and Clarence Felder, (Executive Producer/writer, star) It will be moderated by Director/writer/producer/co-star, Chris Weatherhead-Felder. The event will be taped by cinematographer, Trevor D. Erickson. Panel Discussion followed by short reception. Joining the event will be co-star, Michael Easler, who portrays Governor Rutledge in the film.
