Fountain Inn Firefighters Join Statewide Legislative Advocacy Day in Columbia

March 11, 2026

Members of the Fountain Inn Fire Department traveled to the State House last week to participate in the annual Fire Service Legislative Day. The event, held on Wednesday, March 4, brought together hundreds of first responders from across the Palmetto State to engage directly with lawmakers.

Hosted by the South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association, the day serves as a formal bridge between local fire stations and the General Assembly. Under a white tent on the State House grounds, firefighters from various districts met with senators and representatives to discuss the specific needs of their home communities.

Building Relationships Beyond the Station

For the Fountain Inn delegation, the trip provided an opportunity to speak one-on-one with state leaders about the challenges facing modern fire departments. Legislative Day is designed to move beyond formal policy papers, allowing firefighters to share firsthand accounts of operational hurdles, infrastructure needs, and the importance of continued state support for the fire service.

Key activities during the event included:

  • Congressional Escorts: Firefighters volunteered to escort state lawmakers from their offices in the Blatt and Gressette buildings to the central luncheon.

  • Grassroots Advocacy: Personnel engaged in discussions regarding pending legislation that impacts firefighter health, safety standards, and department funding.

  • Networking: The gathering allowed members of the Fountain Inn department to exchange strategies and training ideas with colleagues from other municipalities and counties.

A Focus on Safety and Professionalism

The department’s participation in the event follows a period of notable achievement and growth. In February, the department took delivery of a new, high-tech fire engine equipped with the HAAS Alert system, which warns nearby drivers of approaching emergency vehicles. Additionally, Fire Chief Russell Alexander was recently named the South Carolina Firefighter Mobilization Coordinator of the Year, highlighting the department’s active role in statewide leadership.

Officials from the South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association noted that the presence of local personnel at the Capitol is vital for shaping the policies that govern emergency response. By maintaining a visible presence in Columbia, departments like Fountain Inn ensure that the voices of those on the front lines are heard when state-level decisions are made regarding public safety.

The Fountain Inn Fire Department continues to prioritize professional development and community advocacy as part of its mission to protect lives and property within the city and surrounding Laurens and Greenville counties.
