Roots of Success: Mauldin High FFA Prepares for Annual Spring Plant Sale
March 13, 2026As the weather warms and the local community turns its attention to spring gardens, the Mauldin High School greenhouse is buzzing with activity. The Mauldin High FFA has officially announced that its annual Spring Plant Sale will return this year, taking place on the first two Saturdays in April.
The event serves as the primary fundraiser for the school’s FFA chapter and provides a real-world laboratory for students enrolled in agricultural education courses. From propagating seeds in late winter to managing soil health and irrigation, students have been responsible for every stage of growth in preparation for the upcoming sale.
Student Grown and Community Focused
The sale is more than just a retail event; it is a showcase of student expertise. Members of the FFA have spent months tending to a wide variety of flora, ensuring that the selections are healthy and ready for local transplanting. Visitors can expect a diverse inventory, typically including:
-
Colorful Annuals: Popular choices for flower beds and hanging baskets.
-
Hearty Perennials: Plants designed to return year after year in the South Carolina climate.
-
Garden Starters: A selection of vegetable and herb starts, ranging from tomatoes and peppers to basil and parsley.
By purchasing from the greenhouse, residents directly support student travel to state competitions, leadership development conferences, and the maintenance of the agricultural facilities on the Butler Road campus.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
The plant sale represents the FFA motto of Learning to Do, Doing to Learn. For the students, the project involves mastering the science of horticulture while also gaining experience in small business management, inventory control, and customer service.
Under the guidance of agricultural educators, students learn the technical requirements for each species, such as light needs and watering schedules, so they can provide expert advice to community members on the days of the sale.
Sale Logistics
The Mauldin High FFA greenhouse is located behind the main school building at 701 East Butler Road. While specific hours are usually set for the morning and early afternoon, organizers recommend arriving early, as popular varieties and hanging baskets often sell out quickly.
