Citizens Academy Session 3 Focuses on Drug Awareness and School Safety
March 18, 2026The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office continued its Citizens Academy on Tuesday, March 17, with Session 3 focused on drug awareness, prevention, and emerging issues affecting schools and communities.
Participants heard from members of the sheriff’s office investigative team along with Sgt. DeVost, who shared insight into current drug trends and the growing challenge of vaping among young people.
Understanding drug trends
An investigator with the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office led the first portion of the session, providing an overview of several illegal drugs including heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, and fentanyl.
Participants learned how substance abuse can contribute to accidents, crime, domestic incidents, and serious health consequences. The presentation also highlighted how population growth and new development can naturally lead to increased calls for service for local law enforcement.
The dangers of fentanyl
A significant part of the discussion focused on fentanyl and the dangers associated with the drug. Attendees learned that fentanyl is often mixed with other substances, making it especially dangerous and unpredictable.
The session also included information about Narcan, a medication used by first responders to reverse opioid overdoses, and how quick action can help save lives.
Vaping and youth concerns
The second portion of the evening was led by Sgt. DeVost, who supervises school resource officers and serves as a D.A.R.E. instructor.
He discussed the growing use of vaping products among youth and explained that many devices are intentionally designed to resemble everyday items such as pens, highlighters, and key fobs, making them easier to conceal.
Sgt. DeVost also explained that some vape products contain nicotine or THC and may come from unregulated sources, which can pose serious health risks.
Supporting safe schools
Sgt. DeVost noted that Laurens County schools maintain a zero-tolerance policy regarding vapes. School resource officers work closely with administrators to address violations while also educating students about the risks.
Building community understanding
The Citizens Academy continues to provide residents with a behind-the-scenes look at the work of the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office.
Through open discussion and education, the program helps strengthen connections between law enforcement and the community while increasing awareness about issues affecting Laurens County families.
