Laurens City Council Highlights Community Events, Accessibility, and Inclusion at March 17 Meeting
March 18, 2026At the Laurens City Council meeting held Tuesday, March 17, 2026, Mayor Nathan Senn and council members addressed a number of items focused on community events, accessibility, and inclusion.
Mayor Senn used his Mayor’s Report to highlight several events scheduled throughout the year that will bring residents together in downtown Laurens. Among the upcoming events are STEAM on the Square on March 28, the State of the City address on April 7, and the Earth Day Celebration on April 23. Summer and fall events include the Juneteenth Celebration from June 12–14, Carolina Day on June 28, and Freedom Fest on July 3. Later in the year, residents can look forward to the Halloween Spooktacular on October 30, the Christmas Tree Lighting on December 4, and the annual Christmas Parade on December 5.

Recognizing Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
During the meeting, council members unanimously approved a resolution declaring March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. The resolution recognizes the importance of promoting inclusion, addressing societal barriers, and celebrating the contributions of individuals with developmental disabilities.
Council presented the resolution to Tara Glenn of the former Laurens County Disabilities and Special Needs Board, now known as Pathways.
Glenn shared that the organization helps employ 38 people in Laurens County and has expanded its services to include occupational therapy and speech therapy.
Downtown Plaza Designated Smoke-Free
Council also unanimously approved a resolution designating the downtown plaza as a smoke-free zone. While specific enforcement details were not discussed during the meeting, city officials indicated that signage will be posted to inform visitors that smoking is not permitted in the area.
Board of Zoning Appeals Appointment Tabled
Council members voted to table the proposed appointment of Michanna Tate, Managing Attorney and Manager of Access Law LLC in Laurens, to the Laurens Board of Zoning Appeals. Council members indicated they would like additional information before making a decision.
It was also noted that Tate has announced her candidacy for the South Carolina House of Representatives, District 14, which may factor into consideration of the appointment.
Little River Park Renovations Continue
Mayor Senn also confirmed during the meeting that Little River Park remains closed while renovations continue. Once completed, the park will be fully compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, improving accessibility for residents and visitors.
