Prescribed Fire Awareness Month Highlights Benefits for South Carolina Landscapes
March 21, 2026As part of Prescribed Fire Awareness Month, the South Carolina Forestry Commission is encouraging residents and landowners to better understand the role of prescribed burning—and the laws and safety measures that come with it.
Prescribed fire, also known as controlled burning, is a carefully planned process used to manage forests, improve wildlife habitat, and reduce the risk of dangerous wildfires across South Carolina.
WHAT IS PRESCRIBED FIRE?
A prescribed burn is a controlled fire applied to forest, brush, or grassland under specific environmental conditions to achieve land management goals. These burns are conducted by trained professionals and must follow strict guidelines to ensure safety and effectiveness.
In South Carolina, prescribed burns are considered beneficial to the public and play a key role in maintaining healthy ecosystems when done correctly.
WHY PRESCRIBED FIRE MATTERS
The Forestry Commission highlights several important benefits of prescribed burning:
-
Reduces excess vegetation that can fuel wildfires
-
Improves wildlife habitat and promotes native plant growth
-
Helps control pests, disease, and invasive species
-
Prepares land for agriculture or tree planting
-
Supports overall forest health and sustainability
By intentionally reducing fuel on the ground, prescribed fire lowers the intensity and spread of future wildfires—something especially important in a state with significant rural and forested land.
RULES AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
Prescribed burning in South Carolina is highly regulated. Key requirements include:
-
A written prescribed fire plan must be prepared and followed
-
A certified prescribed fire manager must be present during the burn
-
Burns must comply with South Carolina Smoke Management Guidelines
-
Landowners must notify the Forestry Commission before conducting a burn
Those planning a prescribed burn must call the Forestry Commission and provide detailed information, including the location, purpose, acreage, and conditions of the planned burn.
SUPPORT AVAILABLE FOR LANDOWNERS
For those who need assistance, the Forestry Commission offers services to help safely carry out prescribed burns. This includes:
-
Professional guidance from foresters
-
Firebreak construction
-
Equipment support
-
Full-service prescribed burning for a fee
Landowners can also view a statewide map of active prescribed burns and check fire weather conditions to determine if it is a safe day to burn.
A LONGSTANDING TOOL FOR A SAFER FUTURE
While fire is often viewed as destructive, prescribed burning is a proven and essential tool in South Carolina’s land management strategy. When conducted properly, it not only protects communities from wildfire but also strengthens the natural landscape for future generations.
Residents are encouraged to learn more about prescribed burning requirements and resources through the South Carolina Forestry Commission and to always follow proper notification and safety procedures before burning outdoors.
