Apply for volunteer opportunities on county boards, committees
March 31, 2026Richland County offers the public opportunities to stay active in their local government by serving on one of several volunteer boards, commissions and committees.
To apply for an open position online, go to www.richlandcountysc.gov/Government/Get-Involved/Apply-to-Serve or visit www.richlandcountysc.gov and search for “Apply to Serve.” County Council will accept applications for the following vacancies until 5 p.m. Friday, April 3:
- Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee – five vacancies

- two applicants must have a background in the lodging industry
- one applicant must have a background in the hospitality industry
- one applicant must have a cultural background
- one is an at-large seat
- Board of Assessment Appeals – one vacancy
- Board of Zoning Appeals – four vacancies
- Building Codes Board of Appeals – six vacancies

- one applicant must be from the architecture industry
- one applicant must be from the gas industry
- one applicant must be from the plumbing industry
- one applicant must be from the engineering industry
- two applicants must be from the fire industry as alternates
- Business Service Center Appeals Board – two vacancies (applicants must be CPAs)
- Central Midlands Council of Governments – one vacancy
- Community Relations Council – three vacancies
- East Richland Public Service Commission – two vacancies
- Employee Grievance Committee – three vacancies (applicants must be Richland County Government employees)
- Hospitality Tax Advisory Committee – two vacancies
- Midlands Workforce Development Board – six vacancies

- one applicant must represent the apprenticeship industry
- one applicant must represent the career and technical education industry
- four applicants must represent the private sector
- Planning Commission – three vacancies
- Riverbanks Park Commission – one vacancy (“joint” at-large member will serve a six-year term and is not eligible for reappointment)
Those interested in learning more about volunteering on a board, commission or committee are strongly encouraged to visit the County’s website or speak with their Council district representative.
Before applying for an open position online, please note the dates and times the particular board, commission or committee meets to ensure your availability for meetings. The Clerk of Council’s office will contact applicants to schedule a brief interview with the Rules and Appointments Committee. Interviews are on Tuesday afternoons and are scheduled to begin in May.
