United Way of Greenville County invests in Greenville’s next generation of Black leaders
April 9, 2026African American Leadership Affinity Group to Award Multiple $5,000 Scholarships and Launch Inaugural Pitch Competition | Deadline April 19
United Way of Greenville County, through its African American Leadership (AAL) Affinity Group, is awarding multiple $5,000 scholarships to graduating seniors in Greenville County. New this year, students can also compete in a pitch competition for additional prize money. Applications are due Sunday, April 19, 2026.
The program is open to emerging Black leaders who demonstrate academic excellence, community commitment and a vision for Greenville’s future and invites them to compete for additional funding by answering one bold question: What would you fund with $1 million?
Multiple $5,000 Scholarships: Two Honored Leaders
Multiple $5,000 awards will be given, in honor of Judge F. Merl Code and carrying the legacy of Marvin Monroe Ward.

Judge F. Merl Code Scholarship: Recognizes students who demonstrate academic excellence, community service and financial need.

Marvin Monroe Ward Legacy Scholarship: Honors the life and legacy of Marvin Monroe Ward by supporting purpose-driven students committed to serving their community.
New in 2026: The Pitch Competition
Students are asked one question: Imagine you have $1 million to invest in the Greenville community, how would you create meaningful change? Selected finalists present live at the Black Futures event before a panel of AAL Council members, United Way of Greenville County board members and community leaders.
Pitch Competition Awards:

1st Place: $3,000

2nd Place: $1,500

3rd Place: $1,000
Eligibility
Applicants must:
-
Be a 2025–26 graduating senior in Greenville County

Have a 3.0 GPA or higher
-
Be an emerging African American leader
Students may apply for the scholarship only, the pitch competition only, or both.
