College of Charleston to host panel discussion about current state of college basketball
April 9, 2026The Department of Communication at College of Charleston will host a panel discussion titled “Portals and Paychecks: The State of College Basketball.”
A trio of experts will speak on the topic Apr. 14 at 4:30 p.m. in Rita Hollings Science Center (Room 101). The panel is open to the public.
National Basketball Hall of Famer Debbie Antonelli, The Field of 68 Co-Founder Jeff Goodman and College of Charleston Director of Athletics Matt Roberts will discuss the landscape of college basketball in today’s world of transfer portals and name, image and likeness (NIL).
Moderating the proceedings will be Scott Eisberg, Sports Director for ABC News 4 in Charleston and an adjunct Communication professor at the College.
Antonelli is one of the nation’s top college basketball television analysts. She calls women’s and men’s games at the highest level, on the largest broadcast networks. She has won two Emmy Awards and one Gracie Award. She is a member of the North Carolina State University Women’s Basketball Ring of Honor.
Goodman is one of college basketball’s leading “insider” analysts. The Field of 68 is one of the sport’s top resources for breaking news. He has worked for several major outlets, including Stadium, ESPN, CBS Sports and Fox Sports.
Roberts has supervised 19 sports at College of Charleston at the NCAA Division I level for nine years. He has been at the helm for three men’s NCAA Tournament teams (2018, 2023, 2024). In addition, the Cougar women’s team made its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2026.
Eisberg has worked at Charleston’s ABC News 4 since 2007. He has won multiple South Carolina Sportscaster of the Year Awards, as well as an Edward R. Murrow Award. He has covered the Men’s Basketball Final Four along with College of Charleston’s recent runs to the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball tournaments.
