New documentary The Soil Remembers to premiere in Greenville with two unique experiences
April 16, 2026A new documentary, The Soil Remembers, will debut in Greenville this spring with two distinct premiere events, offering audiences both a traditional theater screening and an intimate, chef-driven dining experience.
Directed by Greenville-based, award-winning filmmaker Rioin “Rio” Oshiro, the film is an intimate portrait of the Montgomery family, exploring the connection between land, people, and memory. Set against the rhythms of farm life, it explores the meaning of stewardship, legacy, and caring for something greater than oneself.

Tickets for the June 5 dinner premiere can be purchased here.
Oshiro, founder of Undercurrent Film Co. and a James Beard Foundation Media Award winner, has built a reputation for telling stories that highlight purpose-driven work. With The Soil Remembers, that lens turns toward the intersection of regenerative farming, family, and legacy. The film highlights the work of Taylor Montgomery, a respected name in Greenville’s culinary community, whose creativity and leadership helped contribute to the city’s vibrant food culture before returning home to build Montgomery Sky Farm.
The Soil Remembers will first premiere on Sunday, May 3 at the Camelot Theatre, with screenings at 4:45pm and 6:00pm. Designed as a one-night-only event, the screening marks the film’s first appearance on the big screen and invites the community to experience it together – bringing together those who value storytelling, community impact, and the people who pour into it.
A second premiere experience will follow on Friday, June 5 at Zen Greenville. Beginning at 6:00pm, the evening includes a private screening of the film followed by a five-course tasting menu with curated wine pairings, created by Montgomery – now a 2026 James Beard Award Finalist for Best Chef: Southeast. Rooted in the themes of the film, the experience invites guests to step inside the story – where food, memory, and connection bring it to life. Seating is limited.
For both Oshiro and Montgomery, premiering the film in Greenville carries particular significance.
“I’m drawn to stories that reveal the motivation behind people’s work,” Oshiro said, “the thing that keeps them going when it may be easier to ‘throw in the towel’. The Soil Remembers is an encouragement to keep going, or Chef Taylor’s motto “keep pushing”, because what we’re meant for is much bigger than ourselves.”
“This community shaped a big part of my journey as a chef,” Montgomery said. “To bring this film back here – and to create an experience around it – is incredibly special.”
