Presbyterian College Bands Deliver Powerful Tribute to the American Spirit in “250 Years in the Making” Concert
April 20, 2026The Presbyterian College Bands delivered a moving and masterfully executed performance Thursday evening, bringing the audience to its feet with a patriotic program titled “America: 250 Years in the Making.”
From the opening notes of The Star-Spangled Banner to the final strains of a rousing John Philip Sousa tribute, the concert was more than a musical performance—it was an immersive reflection on the American experience, thoughtfully woven together through music, narration, and purpose.
Under the direction of Giovani E. Briguente, the evening carried a clear and compelling narrative: America is a nation shaped not by perfection, but by perseverance, courage, and an enduring commitment to what is good, true, and just.
Briguente’s remarks, delivered as part of the program’s conceptual framework, set the tone for the night. He reminded the audience that while the nation has faced moments of failure throughout its 250-year history, those moments do not define the American spirit. Instead, they stand in contrast to it—a powerful distinction that framed the entire performance.
“We are here to celebrate that true American spirit,” his message conveyed, “the spirit that moves men and women to sacrifice for others, often strangers, and to risk their lives in defense of what is right.”
That spirit came to life through a carefully curated program blending patriotic standards, classical works, and cultural touchstones. Highlights included America the Beautiful and God Bless America, each performed with precision, heart, and a deep sense of reverence.
A particularly meaningful moment unfolded during the Armed Forces Medley, when audience members were invited to stand as their respective branch of service song was played. In a powerful display of community pride and gratitude, those who rose were met with enthusiastic applause from friends, family members, and fellow attendees.
A standout musical highlight came during Lift Every Voice and Sing, featuring a powerful vocal performance by CJ Davis, whose delivery resonated throughout the venue. Equally striking were the instrumental solos, including the moving rendition of Taps by Dr. Francisco Ballestas and the dynamic percussion feature by Jim Adair and Emily Moore.
The performance itself was stellar—technically sharp yet emotionally rich—demonstrating the depth of talent within the ensemble. Each piece flowed seamlessly into the next, creating a cohesive experience that felt both intentional and inspiring.
Elevating the entire evening was the narration, delivered by CJ Davis, whose tone, timing, and presence added remarkable depth to the program. His narration was superb—guiding the audience through themes of sacrifice, gratitude, and national identity with clarity and conviction, without ever overshadowing the music.
The concert’s message extended beyond America’s borders, reflecting on the nation’s global influence and its role in advancing freedom and supporting allies. Briguente, a native of Brazil, offered a personal perspective on how American ideals have inspired nations around the world—adding a meaningful and unique dimension to the evening. The program was not presented as a chronological retelling of history, but rather as a reflection on the enduring qualities that define the nation. As noted in the program, the American spirit is “courageous in its initiatives, thoughtful in its planning, compassionate in its methods, just in its goals, resolute in its actions, and grateful for the fruits of its labor.”
By the concert’s conclusion, that spirit was not only celebrated—it was felt.
The evening closed with a rousing John Philip Sousa tribute, a familiar and uplifting finale that left the audience on a high note and perfectly captured the pride and tradition woven throughout the program.
In a time when reflection on the nation’s identity often sparks division, the Presbyterian College performance offered a unifying reminder of shared values and the ongoing work of building a better future.
It was a night of gratitude, excellence, and inspiration—one that left a lasting impression on all in attendance.
