Hats off for Healing: Barnabas tea party supports equine-assisted therapy
April 20, 2026About 80 guests, dressed in their garden party best, gathered under the tent this past Saturday as the Barnabas Horse Foundation hosted an elegant tea party to raise funds and awareness for its mission: providing equine-assisted therapy for survivors of abuse and trauma, veterans, and first responders.
The afternoon delivered on every detail, from tea sandwiches and sweets to a tempting selection of teas. Tables were beautifully set with fresh flowers and delicate china, generously donated by volunteers. The mostly female crowd arrived in statement hats and fascinators, while a few bowties joined in the fun. Liz Callaway took home top honors for best fascinator.
Thanks to the silent auction, ticket sales, and purchases of painted horse oyster ornaments, handmade soaps, painted horseshoes, and artwork created by veterans and their horses, the event generated more than $10,000 for the foundation. Barnabas relies heavily on fundraisers to help care for its herd of 25 animals, who were enchanting in their own right as guests strolled through the barn and out to the fields.
“Saturday was everything we could have hoped for and more—a beautiful day, beautiful people, the most incredible volunteers, delicious food from Inlet Affairs, and of course, the most wonderful horses. My heart is so full of gratitude for everyone who made the Afternoon Tea such a meaningful and unforgettable success,” said Sue McKinney, Barnabas founder and president.
With any luck, the Afternoon Tea introduced new friends to this outstanding organization—and they’ll stay involved as volunteers, donors, or future guests. Either way, Barnabas has a gift for turning a great cause into a truly memorable afternoon.
