Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments (BCDCOG) & Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) to hold regional transit update meetings

Members of the public are invited to receive updates on the Lowcountry Rapid Transit system & CARTA Now & Next recommendations

The Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments (BCDCOG) and Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) are announcing major updates in planning for and improving regional transit services. The BCDCOG, Lowcountry Rapid Transit (LCRT), CARTA Now & Next project teams will hold joint community open house meetings in April to provide various regional transit planning updates for the public:

  • LCRT’s 100% design completion: Learn more about this major milestone, which brings LCRT one step closer to entering the Construction phase of the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Capital Investment Grants (CIG) program, and get updates on the system’s construction preparations.
    • Members of the public are also encouraged to view the LCRT Virtual On-Demand Meeting, which provides information specific to the LCRT project and will be available 24/7 beginning April 27 through May 27, 2026, at lowcountryrapidtransit.com.
  • CARTA Now & Next recommendations: After conducting an operational analysis and receiving community feedback at the end of 2025, CARTA has developed recommendations for improving its services and will showcase draft proposals for potential service changes.
    •   Members of the public are also encouraged to attend the CARTA virtual meeting, which will be held on Zoom on Monday, May 4, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. and provide

  • Other regional updates: BCDCOG is updating its Regional Transit Framework Plan (RTFP), which outlines a long-range vision for mass transit throughout the region, and will share information on those updates as well as on additional existing transit services, like Tri-County Link.

The public is encouraged to drop in anytime during the open house timeframes. No formal presentation will be given during the meetings.

For decades, BCDCOG and CARTA have continued to advance robust regional transportation planning efforts with the help of their partners, stakeholders, and community members. LCRT is South Carolina’s first mass transit system and the first of several proposed mass transit lines for the region. Combined, improvements to CARTA’s existing services and the implementation of LCRT will enhance connectivity, access, and opportunity and help transform the way the community lives and moves across the region.
