American Revolution Exhibit at Upcountry History Museum takes you from front lines to home fronts
April 24, 2026From 1775-1783, Patriots and Loyalists engaged in ongoing skirmishes and all-out battles as the American Revolution spread throughout the 13 Colonies until the tide of war turned in favor of the Patriots during the 1778-1781 Southern Campaign. And while these battles draw most of the attention, daily life among citizens and non-combatants continued on the home front.
“Upcountry Road to Freedom: Upstate South Carolina During the American Revolution,” the newest exhibition opening April 25, 2026, at the Upcountry History Museum – Greenville County, will focus on the people, places, and events of the Southern Campaign’s war years while offering a look at the culture and life in the Backcountry during this period.
Even before the American Revolution, life in the Backcountry was hard, though it could be made palatable on the home front with items such as furniture, fine china, and glassware that were imported from England and brought up from Charleston. However, as talk of war became reality, Patriots chose to boycott English goods, thus accepting that they would make do with only what they already had, could grow, build, or still import from the West Indies or other European countries. This exhibition will feature original artifacts and archival materials that highlight how life for many families was and how during the war years, they persevered through hard work, determination and belief in the fight for independence.
In addition, the exhibition will showcase original items and accessories from soldiers and civilians which illustrate key phases of the war that include the path to independence, colonists to revolutionaries, the war’s darkest hours, and the new nation’s formation. Perspectives from Upcountry South Carolina women, African Americans (free and enslaved), indigenous peoples, and soldiers will further illustrate what it meant to gain independence and become the United States of America.
This exhibition, organized by the Upcountry History Museum in partnership with Clemson University and private collectors, will be on display through September 5, 2027.
