Midlands Technical College Mavericks win gold at SkillsUSA state competition

April 27, 2026

Students from Midlands Technical College (MTC) delivered an impressive performance at this year’s SkillsUSA South Carolina competition, earning gold medals across multiple disciplines. The competition is a part of the SkillsUSA South Carolina State Leadership and Skills Conference, held annually and bringing together college students from across the state to demonstrate their expertise in individual and team-based skilled trade events.

“These results reflect not only technical excellence, but also the determination, professionalism, and ability our students bring to real-world, team-based environments,” said Ray Thomas, dean of the School of Business and the School of Advanced Manufacturing and Skilled Trades. “This is exactly the type of outcome we strive for, students developing both the technical skills and the confidence to excel in competitive and professional settings.”

From the School of Advanced Manufacturing and Skilled Trades, 20 of 26 students earned gold medals. Competitors participated in events including Building Construction Technology, Machine Tool Technology, Welding, Industrial Electrical, and Commercial Graphics. Eva Carroll, building construction team member, was recently recognized by SkillsUSA for her exceptional talent in the TeamWorks event at SkillsUSA Nationals. She and her team earned a spot this year at Nationals to compete for gold.

Students from the School of STEM also demonstrated strong performance, with five of seven students earning gold medals. Students competed in Web Design and Development, Internetworking, Computer Programming, Information Technology Services, and Architectural Drafting.

Gold medal winners from the state competitions will advance to the SkillsUSA National Championship this June, where they will compete against the nation’s top students.
