Charleston County invites organizations to join ‘Adopt a polling location’ program
April 28, 2026Charleston County is inviting local organizations to participate in its “Adopt a Polling Location” program, a nonpartisan initiative that strengthens Election Day operations while reinvesting funds back into the community.
Administered by the Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections (BVRE), the program enables organizations to staff polling locations with volunteers who complete BVRE-led poll manager training in advance. In return, BVRE compensates participating organizations, allowing them to support community programs or donate to a nonprofit of their choice.
Launched in 2022, the award-winning initiative was the first of its kind in South Carolina and is designed to address poll worker shortages while creating a meaningful opportunity for civic engagement and local reinvestment.
Participating organizations must be nonpartisan and can earn up to $2,500 per location, depending upon the number of volunteers they dedicate to this effort.
“The Adopt a Polling Location program was created to meet the need to fully staff our polling locations while also giving back to the community we serve,” said BVRE Director Isaac Cramer. “It’s a unique opportunity for organizations to be part of the Election Day process and make a real impact, helping reinvest resources right back into the community.”
Poll Worker Qualifications and Requirements
- Poll managers must be registered to vote in South Carolina; residency in Charleston County or a neighboring county is not required.
- Poll managers may not be a candidate, or the spouse, parent, child, or sibling of a candidate appearing on the ballot at their assigned polling location.
- Poll clerks must be registered to vote in the county where they are working or in an adjoining county.
- Some positions require basic computer skills or extended periods of standing, while others are seated and do not require the use of computers or mobile devices.
Election Day
Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with poll workers arriving by 6 a.m. for setup. End times may vary but are typically within one hour after polls close.
Participating organizations may opt for split shifts for poll managers, allowing two individuals to share the day. Poll Clerks and Assistant Poll Clerks must work the full day.
