Mauldin High Student Noel Lyons Awarded Prestigious Marine Option ROTC Scholarship
April 29, 2026Noel Lyons has earned one of the nation’s most competitive military scholarships, receiving the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) Marine Option scholarship. This distinguished achievement places Lyons among an elite group of students selected each year for their leadership, academic excellence, and commitment to serving their country.
The Marine Option NROTC scholarship is a highly selective national award designed to develop future officers in the United States Marine Corps. Recipients are chosen through a rigorous evaluation process that considers academic performance, physical fitness, leadership potential, and character. Those selected receive significant financial support for college, including full tuition, stipends for books, and a monthly allowance, while completing military training alongside their academic studies.
Lyons will attend the University of South Carolina this fall, where he will join the NROTC unit and begin his path toward becoming a commissioned Marine Corps officer. As part of the program, he will participate in leadership development, physical training, and Naval Science coursework while pursuing his degree. Upon successful completion of the program and Officer Candidate training, scholarship recipients are commissioned as second lieutenants in the Marine Corps.
This accomplishment reflects Lyons’ dedication not only in the classroom, but also in demonstrating the discipline, initiative, and perseverance required to succeed in one of the military’s most demanding officer commissioning programs. The Marine Option scholarship is widely recognized as a gateway to leadership, preparing young men and women to lead Marines in service to the nation.
As Lyons prepares to begin this next chapter, he carries with him the support of his community and the promise of a bright future in military leadership. His selection for the Marine Option ROTC scholarship stands as a testament to his hard work and commitment to excellence.
