Midlands Technical College and Lexington Health announce new workforce partnership

Midlands Technical College (MTC) and Lexington Health are partnering to expand the college’s Radiologic Technology and Surgical Technology programs. The organizations announced the workforce development collaboration on April 29, 2026, at Lexington Health’s Irmo Medical Park location.
The partnership includes two new teaching sites and expanded clinical site opportunities at Irmo Medical Park, allowing the organizations to better meet staffing needs for high-demand, lucrative radiologic and surgical technology jobs in the Midlands.
“Locally and nationwide, there are critical shortages of radiologic and surgical technologists,” said Jeff McCarty, dean of MTC’s School of Health Care. “We are thankful for this partnership with Lexington Health that is helping us meet the needs of our community partners while ensuring students receive hands-on, real-world training that makes them job-ready on day one.”
The Radiologic Technology classroom, which is a former patient radiology lab, comes equipped with a wide range of radiology equipment to be used for training. The Surgical Technology classroom, which is used for lecture and labs, can adequately hold 30 students, up from a former max capacity of 24.
With these new classroom areas, plus Lexington Health’s additional clinical support, the college was able to increase enrollment this year by 36% in Radiologic Technology and 25% in Surgical Technology.

We are proud to partner with Midlands Technical College to meet the demand for skilled technologists.”
In the Midlands, the average annual salary for surgical technologists is $57,165; for radiologic technologists, it’s $64,581 (according to EMSI data as of 2025).
