Habitat for Humanity Georgetown faces funding shortage for essential home repairs

May 4, 2026

Habitat for Humanity for Georgetown County is facing a critical funding shortage for its Repair & Revitalization Program at a time when local demand for essential home maintenance is surging.

The organization is turning to the community for support during Palmetto Giving Day, a 36-hour online giving event scheduled for May 5-6. Executive Director Jake Rigopoulos said the funds are vital for homeowners who rely on the program to remain safe and independent in their homes.

“These repairs are not optional; they are essential to staying safe and secure in the homes they love,” Rigopoulos said. “Your support today will help restore funding for this program so we can continue meeting these urgent needs for neighbors who would otherwise have nowhere to turn.”

The program provides a range of services, including the installation of ADA-compliant handicap ramps, window and door replacements, motion-activated lighting, and exterior painting.

One recent recipient, a lifelong Georgetown resident identified as Mr. Buttone, recently received a new ramp and security upgrades.

“I’ve always tried to keep my home welcoming, but getting repairs done has been hard,” Buttone said. “Now that the work is finished, I feel much more proud of my home.”

Habitat officials noted that improvements like the handicap ramp are especially impactful, allowing aging residents to maintain their independence and “peace of mind” within the community.

Those wishing to support the initiative can donate through the official Palmetto Giving Day platform. Community members can also support the cause by creating individual fundraisers to encourage friends and family to contribute to the county’s revitalization efforts. “However you choose to give, every contribution helps make a lasting impact right here in Georgetown County,” Rigopoulos added.
