Southside Park Nears Completion on Major Renovations Ahead of Waterpark Season
May 6, 2026Significant upgrades are taking shape at Southside Park as the regional recreation hub prepares for the busy summer season.
In a recent update, Greenville County Recreation announced that several major phases of the comprehensive park renovation are now complete, offering a freshly modernized experience for visitors just in time for the reopening of Discovery Island Waterpark on May 23.
Key Upgrades and Current Progress
The ongoing revitalizations are transforming both the infrastructure and the recreational spaces within the 65-acre park. Notable developments include:
Paving and Access: Newly constructed roadways and interconnected parking lots are now fully complete, giving drivers a smoother entry and upgraded parking options.
Modernized Playground: The park’s central, inclusive playground is in its final stages and is almost ready to open to the public. The revamped design replaces traditional mulch with fully accessible safety surfacing.
Safety and Connection: Brand-new lighting has been installed throughout key areas. Work is also underway on an upgraded network of concrete sidewalks and stairways connecting the main walking paths to the park’s picnic and shade structures.
Athletic Courts: Upgrades to the park’s tennis, basketball, and pickleball courts are scheduled to begin shortly.
The park’s extensive renovation also features a massive eco-friendly stormwater management system below the surface, designed to reduce runoff and protect the nearby Reedy River watershed.
Open During Construction
While parts of Southside Park remain an active construction zone, the facility remains open to the public.
With the popular Discovery Island Waterpark scheduled to open in just a few weeks, county recreation officials are asking visitors to use caution, respect active construction fences, and avoid taped-off areas as crews put the finishing touches on the park’s new features.
