Explore South Carolina State Parks for Free with Your Greenville County Library Card

May 6, 2026

As local flora and fauna flourish across the Upstate, the Greenville County Library System (GCLS) is highlighting a budget-friendly resource for outdoor enthusiasts: free South Carolina State Park Passports.

The program, offered in partnership with South Carolina Parks, Recreation, and Tourism (SCPRT) and the South Carolina State Library, allows adult library cardholders to check out a vehicle entry pass at no cost, making it easier than ever to explore the state’s natural beauty.

How the Library Park Pass Program Works

Rather than purchasing an annual state park hangtag, Greenville County residents can utilize their library card to access South Carolina’s 47 state parks.

  • Who Can Borrow: Anyone holding a valid GCLS Adult Card or Non-Resident Adult Card in good standing.

  • Loan Period: Passes can be checked out for exactly one week (7 days). To ensure fair access for all residents, renewals are not permitted.

  • Vehicle Admission: The checked-out hangtag provides free, single-day entry for all occupants traveling inside a single, standard-sized vehicle.

  • Statewide Reach: The passport can be used to visit multiple state parks throughout the seven-day loan period.

Because demand is high during peak spring and summer seasons, GCLS officials recommend that patrons call their local library branch ahead of time to verify same-day availability and reserve an available pass.

Once finished, passes must be returned in person to the specific GCLS branch from which they were borrowed. Late returns are subject to an overdue fee of $1 per day, up to a maximum of $10.

Discovering the Upstate’s Native Habitats

The state park passport program is designed to encourage residents to experience protected public lands and discover South Carolina’s diverse wildlife. Upstate library patrons have several scenic parks located right in their backyard:

  • Paris Mountain State Park: Located just minutes from downtown Greenville, this park offers hiking, biking, and kayak rentals around Lake Placid.

  • Table Rock State Park: Offering a more challenging trek, Table Rock serves as the gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains and features towering waterfalls and panoramic mountain views.

  • Caesars Head State Park: Famous for its easily accessible overlook, visitors can take in dramatic views of the Blue Ridge Escarpment or hike to the 420-foot Raven Cliff Falls.
