Friends of the Georgetown Library continues summer tradition at the Georgetown Growers Market
May 7, 2026The Friends of the Georgetown Library will once again be participating this summer in the Georgetown Growers Market.
Starting on Saturday, May 30, and continuing through Saturday, August 29, the Friends of the Georgetown Library will be holding its weekly Book Sale as part of the market, which is located at the intersection of Front Street and Fraser Street/Route 17 on the site of the old City Hall complex. The market runs from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, featuring a number of local farmers and vendors each week.
Proceeds from the book sale help the Friends’ efforts to support programming for children and adults at the Georgetown Library. In fact, they raised a record $4000 last summer and a total of $17,000 over the past five years of having the summer book sales! When you consider they only charge fifty cents for a paperback and $1 for hardbacks, that is a LOT of books, indeed.
According to long-time Friends member and former president Bob Willey, the Friends used to have a twice-a-year major book sale at the Library, but the COVID pandemic shut those down. Luckily this group is very creative, and they started weekly book sales at the original Farmers Market on the old Courthouse parking lot in the summer of 2021.
While they continue their special book sales at the biannual Community Yard Sales and at the Wooden Boat Show, the Friends really enjoy participating at the weekly Growers Market during the summer months.
“It is a wonderful way to connect with our community and to serve by providing books and other items like puzzles, games, and sometimes even stuffed storybook characters, at inexpensive prices,” Willey added. “Those of us who volunteer find the Saturday experience to be fun interacting with our Georgetown neighbors of all ages.”
