Hood Construction celebrates 40 years of Building It The Right Way

Hood Construction, a Columbia locally owned general contractor, proudly marks its 40th anniversary in 2026, celebrating four decades of “Building It The Right Way” and serving communities across South Carolina.

Founded in 1986 by Mark Hood, the company began with a simple mission: to prioritize safety and put the client first on every project. With only a handful of tools in the back of his pickup truck and a small, dedicated team, Mark established Hood Construction’s early reputation by taking on modest renovations and small upfits throughout the Midlands. From the beginning, the guiding mantra, Build it the Right Way, shaped the firm’s culture and established a foundation for long-term success.

Today, Hood Construction has grown to more than 135 teammates, including a highly skilled management and administrative staff with extensive expertise across all sectors of the industry. The firm’s portfolio now spans healthcare, higher education, K–12 schools, municipal and religious projects, commercial and office facilities, historic renovations, hospitality environments, and more. For many years, the company’s work was concentrated in the Midlands and Lowcountry, but its footprint has steadily expanded across South Carolina, including significant growth in the Upstate.

Led by Safety Director Kevin Hooker, Hood Construction’s comprehensive safety program reached the major milestone in May 2026 of 3,500,000 man-hours without a lost-time injury, a rare achievement for a firm of its size, particularly one employing such a large number of in-house craft professionals. The number continues to climb as the company maintains this standard of excellence.

In celebration of its 40-year milestone, Hood Construction has launched 40for40: Forty Acts of Service for 40 Years in Business, a year-long volunteer initiative designed to give back to the organizations that have supported the team and their families. A little over a quarter into 2026, the team has already completed several service projects with local partners, including Special Olympics South Carolina, Mission Lexington, Lexington One Educational Foundation, Pawmetto Lifeline, and others.
