An unwavering voice for community
May 12, 2026Greenville has lost a beloved neighbor, tireless advocate and unwavering voice for community. For nearly 30 years, Felsie Harris dedicated her life to uplifting the Haynie‑Sirrine neighborhood — working to ensure that its residents had opportunity, dignity and a strong foundation. Harris died on April 29 at the age of 79.
Born and raised in Haynie‑Sirrine, Harris returned to her childhood neighborhood in 1998. As Harris recalled it, she was sipping a glass of sweet tea on her porch when a local leader approached her and said, “I hope you don’t think you’re going to move back into this neighborhood and not contribute.” Harris accepted the challenge wholeheartedly. “I didn’t know what I was doing,” she recalled with a smile — but she learned quickly and built partnerships with the City and non-profits.
Her dedication helped bring new affordable housing to the community, including a duplex on Urban Street and The Preserve at Logan Park, a senior housing community that reflected her belief in treating people with kindness and respect to build lifelong connection.
Beyond affordable housing, Harris advocated for safe streets, upgraded play areas and protected green space. “I just speak my mind because I want the best for my neighborhood,” she said. That sentiment that guided her every day. In 2023, the City honored her service by dedicating Harris Street in Haynie‑Sirrine in her honor.
“She’s just always been a role model for me since I’ve known her and a friend because she cares about her neighbors,” said neighbor Becky Warth.
Harris and her husband, Lark, were married for 44 years and built a large and loving family that includes five children, sixteen grandchildren and five great‑grandchildren.
