Dick Goodwin Big Band performs “Broadway and Beyond” at the Arts Center of Kershaw County on May 28
May 12, 2026The Arts Center of Kershaw County welcomed the renowned Dick Goodwin Big Band for a thrilling evening of live jazz on Wednesday, May 28, at 7:30 PM – bringing one of South Carolina’s most celebrated musical ensembles to the Wood Auditorium for the Center’s season closer. Led by acclaimed trumpeter, composer, arranger, and educator Gordon “Dick” Goodwin, the Dick Goodwin Big Band has been a cornerstone of the Midlands jazz scene for decades, captivating audiences with powerful swing arrangements, beloved standards, and world-class musicianship. The concert promises an unforgettable night of timeless big band sound, combining classic jazz tradition with the energy and excitement of live performance.
Goodwin is widely recognized as one of South Carolina’s most influential musical figures. A Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of South Carolina, he came to USC in 1973 to help establish the university’s doctoral composition program and lead its theory and composition studies. Throughout his career, he has served as a composer, conductor, producer, educator, and performer, with compositions and arrangements performed throughout the United States and abroad.
In 2001, Goodwin received the prestigious Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Award, South Carolina’s highest honor in the arts. He is also recognized as a Yamaha Trumpet Artist and continues to perform actively with both the Dick Goodwin Quintet and Dick Goodwin Big Band.
The Dick Goodwin Big Band has remained a beloved fixture across the Southeast, recently appearing at jazz festivals, concert series, and special performances throughout South Carolina. Known for its polished musicianship and dynamic live performances, the ensemble features many of the region’s finest jazz artists and has built a loyal following among jazz lovers of all ages.
“This concert is a wonderful opportunity for our community to experience some of the true legends of South Carolina jazz,” said Chad Henderson, Executive Director. “Dick Goodwin’s influence on music education and performance in our state is extraordinary, and we are honored to bring his incredible big band to Camden for a program of the hits from Broadway and Beyond.”
